Special Events for 2017

Forging the West

May 25th, at 4:00 p.m. In concert with the La Veta Public Library, Franicisco Fort Museum will show the documentary film Forging the West. This 60 minute documentary provides a historical overview of coal mining in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico at the turn of the 20th century. Additionally, the film delves into the development of steel manufacturing in Pueblo, Colorado dubbed the “Pittsburgh of the West.” The film will be shown in the meeting room at the La Veta Public Library located at 310 S. Main St in La Veta. Refreshments will be served. There is no charge for this event, but donations to the museum are always welcome! 

Ghosts of Francisco Fort

June 4th, at 2:00 p.m. For the past year a the team from Paranormal 970 from Loveland, Colorado have been visiting the fort in search of spirits that may linger there. The team is now ready to present their initial findings in this ongoing investigation. Is there an evil spirit in our 1876 school house? Is Col. John M. Francisco's spirit still living in his quarters?  Find out as the folks from Paranormal 970 share their recordings and data. This event will be held in the meeting room at the La Veta Public Library located at 310 S. Main St in La Veta. Refreshments will be served. There is no charge for this event, but donations to the museum are always welcome!

Cowboy Day

June 24th, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Come to Francisco Fort Museum and help us celebrate the history and culture of the American Cowboy. The day will feature Cowboy music, poetry, and storytelling. Food vendors will be on hand as will be booths with arts and crafts.

June 27th, at 7:00 p.m. In concert with the Cuchara Recreation Program, Franicisco Fort Museum offers a repeat showing of the documentary film Forging the West. This 60 minute documentary provides a historical overview of coal mining in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico at the turn of the 20th century. Additionally, the film delves into the development of steel manufacturing in Pueblo, Colorado dubbed the “Pittsburgh of the West.” The film will be shown in the meeting room at the La Veta Public Library located at 310 S. Main St in La Veta. Refreshments will be served. There is no charge for this event, but donations to the museum are always welcome! 

 Francisco Fort Day

July 22nd, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Join us for our most special event at Francisco Fort. Francisco Fort Day is a celebration of the museum and the beginnings of La Veta, Colorado. The fort is 155 years old this year! Admission is free, and visitors will be treated to special presentations. The events start at 8:00 a.m. with the Methodists Men's Pancake Breakfast. All proceeds raised go to the museum.

After breakfast ends at 10:00 a.m. we will have family oriented games and activities throughout the day. Musical performances and more will be featured on the stage in our plaza. Take in a free guided tour of the museum. Have a sasparilla in our saloon. Relax under our giant cottonwood tree, plantes in 1878 by Col. Francisco. Food, arts, and crafts, vendors will be on hand. The day will also feature ongoing demonstrations at the fort, including:

• Adobe Brick-Making with David Steffan
• Mining Museum Presentations by Will Prator
• Bread Baking in Our Horno by Pat McMahon

• Blacksmith Demonstration by The Crooked Hook Blacksmith
• Wool Spinning with Marta Moore
